The Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry was the first Canadian unit to arrive on the Western Front when they landed in France in December, 1914 as part of 80 Brigade, 27th Division. which, during the early months of 1915 were holding gthe line to the south of Ypres. James Sleven was killed on 1st March, 1915 but as yet there is no further information concerning his death. The attrition rate among British soldiers on the Western Front was on average 300 each day and 60% of these were as a result of shellfire. When not involved in an actual battle it was either shell fire or a sniper’s bullet that caused most deaths and injuries.
